FAIRFAX, Va. - At the end of the 2002 fall season, George Mason's men's golf was rated ninth out of 30 teams in the fall top 30 team rankings for the Division I - Mid-Atlantic Region.
Team rankings, which are decided by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Advisory Committee, are based on head-to-head competitions throughout the fall. The Golfweek Magazine/Sagarin team rankings lists the Patriots 10th out of 30 teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region, while Golfstat has Mason ranked 11th.
Individually, junior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) concluded the fall rated ninth by Golfstat and 12th by Golfweek/Sagarin. Freshman Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing) was listed 23rd in the final fall Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
Golfweek Magazine has taken to publishing the Sagarin ratings of every school in the country. His ratings are baskically a head-to-head rating against all the schools that a team faces. Golfstat has its own Head-to-Head rating which are similar to the Sagarin. The top four teams in the Regional Committee rankings get the Mid-Atlantic Region's NCAA bids. The ratings conducted by Golfweek and Golfstat have no bearing on NCAA selection.
