WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior All-American attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) scored five goals and one assist, while sophomore attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD/Southern) netted eight points on four goals and four assists to lead George Mason to a 17-4 victory over host George Washington Wednesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field on GW's campus.
George Mason (1-1) bolted out of the gates early, scoring five straight goals from four different players, including two from junior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) off feeds from sophomore Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, MD/Sparrows Point), who also had a goal in the period. George Washington's (1-1) Megan McDonough netted the Colonials first goal at the 10:44 mark. But, the celebration was short-lived as Toomey connected on three consecutive goals and Manas found the net at 15:30, putting Mason ahead 9-1 in the game's first 16 minutes. Following another George Washington score, Toomey and Mason freshman attacker Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) ended the half with two more goals, giving the Patriots an 11-2 halftime lead.
Mason's lead was never in doubt in the second frame, as the Patriots outscored the Colonials 6-2 in the second stanza. Three other Patriot players, freshman midfielder Sarah Bryant (Fairfax Station, VA/W.T. Woodson), sophomore attack Jeannine Ohler (Malvern, PA/Great Valley), and senior midfielder Erika Webster (Burke, VA/Paul VI) also scored goals.
Mason's defensive unit of seniors Paula Priest (Kingsville, MD/Fallston) and Frankie Bell (Great Falls, VA/Herndon) and freshman Katie Linnertz (Syracuse, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) forced 30 turnovers and allowed only 14 shots.
The Patriots split time at goalkeeper as senior Carolyn Whittenberg (Springfield, VA/Lake Braddock) recorded her first collegiate victory as she held the Colonials to two goals in 30 minutes while stopping one shot. Sophomore reserve goalie Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) also allowed two goals in 30 minutes and made five saves. GW goalkeeper Rachel Abdulla allowed 17 goals and had five saves.
