FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior All-American attack Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) scored five goals and added two assists in leading George Mason to a convincing 12-5 victory over visiting William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at GMU Stadium. The Patriots post their second consecutive victory and improve to 4-3 on the year, while picking up their first conference win to go to 1-2 in the league. The Tribe drops to 1-8 overall and remains winless in the CAA at 0-3.
Toomey dominated the first half, scoring four of Mason's eight goals, including three in a row, as the Patriots shut out the Tribe, 8-0, and limited W&M to just 11 shots in the frame.
"It was a total team effort," she said. "Every person stepped up today and made plays when it mattered."
George Mason didn't let up at the beginning of the second period either, as Patriot sophomore attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD/Southern), who finished with three goals, opened the frame with two scores, followed by a goal from Toomey, that pushed the Patriots lead to 11-0 with only 23 minutes left in the game.
William & Mary didn't get on the board until the 44th minute when midfielder Morgan Watkins, who led the Tribe with three goals, received the feed from attack Laurice Rutledge to make the score 11-1. The Tribe would trail 11-3 when Toomey dished off to Patriot junior midfielder Kristen Olson (Aurora, CO/Eaglecrest) for a netter, extending Mason's lead to 12-3 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. W&M would score twice more, but the Mason defense continued to hold.
"Our coaches gave us a new defensive scheme today and we believed in it," said freshman defender Katie Linnertz (Syracuse, NY/Cicero North Syracuse). "William & Mary is a good team, and this win keeps us in the CAA hunt."
"We expect all of our games to go well when we play to our potential," stated Mason head coach Amy Umbach. "When our defense executes the game plan, like they did today, and our offense plays hard, we get results like this."
Mason sophomore goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) recorded 16 saves, while W&M goalie Kitt Turnbaugh made eight saves and allowed 11 goals. Tribe reserve goalie Sydney Richards stopped one shot.
George Mason visits top-ranked Loyola, Wednesday at 4 p.m.
