FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason rallied from an 8-5 second half deficit, scoring six unanswered goals to post a come-from-behind 11-8 victory over visiting Boston University Sunday afternoon at GMU Stadium. Mason snaps a two game losing skid with the win to even its record at 3-3, while the Terriers drop their second straight and fall to 2-3 on the season.
Sophomore attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD/Southern) scored three goals and added two assists in leading George Mason to the win. Patriot sophomore attacker Jeannine Ohler (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) recorded two goals and two assists, while senior All-American attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) also posted two goals and assisted on another. Freshman midfielder Mary Beth Miller led Boston University with three goals and an assist.
Mason opened the contest with three consecutive scores as junior midfielders Stacy Berger (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) and Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and Manas each found the back of the net. Miller broke the scoring drought for the Terriers, netting their first goal eight minutes into the game. Manas pushed the lead to 4-1, but consecutive BU goals made it 4-3 in favor of the Patriots with just over 15 minutes left in the half. Following Ohler's goal at 18:15, Boston University ran off three straight markers in the final seven minutes of the frame to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.
Terrier freshman midfielder Danica Strutt and junior attacker Caroline Kelleher continued the scoring run for BU as each scored a goal to start the second period, giving Boston University an 8-5 advantage with 28 minutes remaining in the game. After being held scoreless for the final 12 minutes of the first half and two minutes into the second, Mason erupted for six unanswered markers in the frame, including two from Toomey, as the Patriots battled back in the final 28 minutes to earn the victory.
Patriot defenders Katie Linnertz (Fr., Syracuse, NY/Cicero North Syracuse), Michelle Brady (Fr., Fairfax, VA/Paul VI), Tracey Dow (So., Alexandria, VA/Mt. Vernon), and Frankie Bell (Sr., Great Falls, VA/Herndon) limited the Terriers to four second half shots, and caused 14 turnovers for the game.
Mason sophomore goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) recorded 11 saves, while BU sophomore goalie Anne Sheridan stopped eight shots. Both teams were even on shots for the game with 18.
George Mason completes a three-game homestand Saturday when it hosts Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary at noon.
