Prosise Leads Patriots Past Vikings, 11-5

FAIRFAX, VA ... George Mason freshman Nick Prosise had three hits and drove in three runs to help lead the Patriots past Cleveland State, 11-5, in a non-conference college baseball game Sunday afternoon at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field.

George Mason won for the sixth time in its last eight games to improve to 10-8, while Cleveland State dropped to 1-10.

Mason scored in double figures and posted double-digit hits for the second straight day as it took two of three games from the Vikings over the weekend. The Patriots knocked out 11 hits Sunday as juniors Bruce Baldwin and Kyle Barrett each added two, while Barrett and sophomore Adam Innerst each added two RBI.

The Patriots got on the scoreboard first as sophomore Matt Cooksey scored on a single by Baldwin in the bottom of the first inning, but Cleveland State scored three runs in the top of the second for a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Dominic Erney (3-5) led off with a double and one out later, senior Brian Beaumier walked and junior Doug Besozzi (2-4) singled to load the bases. Sophomore Ben Smith drove in the tying run with a single and a single by freshman Gian Testa (2-4) brought home two more.

Mason got a run back in the second as junior Nick Shimer scored on a sacrifice fly by Cooksey, then the Patriots scored four runs in the third for a 6-3 lead. Prosise had a run-scoring single, Innerst followed with a two-run single and Prosise scored when junior Jeff Palumbo reached on a bases-loaded walk.

The Vikings scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead to 6-5 as freshman Steve Chinn (3-4) drove in a run with a double and scored on a single by junior Mario Angelo. But Mason put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth as Barrett and Prosise both drove in two runs.

Freshman Jason Mills (2-0) picked up the win as he allowed 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out nine, while sophomore Josh Morrison allowed two hits and struck out two over the final 3 2/3 innings to earn his first save. Sophomore Jimmy Gulden (0-3) took the loss for Cleveland State as he allowed three hits and six runs in 2 1/3 innings.

George Mason hosts nationally ranked Richmond Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
