WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Mar. 16, 2003) - William and Mary's ninth-ranked women's tennis team shut out George Mason, 7-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association match Sunday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. With the loss, the Patriots drop their seventh straight contest and fall to 1-7 on the season (0-2 CAA), while the Tribe improves to 12-4 (3-0 CAA).
W&M claimed the doubles point by winning all three matches by a score of 8-0, and was similarly dominant in singles, winning all six matches, including three without dropping a single game.
Senior Dinali DeSilva (Negombo, Sri Lanka/Stafford International) fell 6-1, 6-0 at #1 singles to Candice Fuchs who is ranked 26th nationally in collegiate women's singles. Freshman Jenn Dektas (Maineville, OH/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to 82nd ranked Megan Muth at No. 2. Junior Deepti Bhalla (Lorton, VA/Hayfield), who saw her first dual match action of the season, was downed 6-0, 6-1 at #4.
Also in action for the first time in a singles dual match this season was Patriot freshman Caroline Kanaskie (West Chester, PA/Unionville) who lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Mason freshman Kathleen Moore (Franklin, VA/Franklin) was downed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 in her first ever collegiate singles dual contest. Sophomore Katie Sloper (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match at #3.
George Mason returns to the GMU Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Morgan State, before heading out of town for two straight CAA matchups against Delaware Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Hofstra Sunday at 10 a.m.
