Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The George Mason women's lacrosse team opened its 2003 campaign at sixth-ranked Maryland. The 20th-ranked Patriots fell 20-5 Wednesday afternoon at the UM Artificial Turf Facility.

Maryland came out on fire scoring nine straight goals in the first 13 minutes to take a 9-0 advantage. Following a goaltender change, the Patriots managed to get back into the game as junior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and senior All-American attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) each scored goals in the final three minutes of the first half, as Maryland led 10-2 at the break.

Mason would score two more goals early in the second frame as sophomore attack Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD/Southern) and junior midfielder Stacy Berger (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) both tallied. Berger assisted on Manas' goal, while Hagan fed Berger at 24:54 in the period, to trail the Terrapins, 11-4.

UMCP, however, found its early firepower once again, scoring nine-in-a-row for a 20-4 lead with 1:46 remaining. Sophomore Brandi Evans' (Fort Howard, MD/Sparrows Point) free position goal with 43 seconds would be Mason's final goal.

The Terrapins outshot the Patriots, 41-9, and won the draw control battle, 16-11. Patriot goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) allowed nine goals and made one save in 12 minutes of action. Reserve keeper Carolyn Whittenberg (Springfield, VA/Lake Braddock) allowed 11 goals, but stopped a career-best 17 shots, while playing 48 minutes.

The Patriots return to action, Wednesday, March 5, at George Washington. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
