FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason's men's golf team opened its spring season Feb. 18-19, at the Charleston Southern (CSU) Spring Kick Off Tournament, held at Coosaw Creeek CC in Charleston, SC. Mason placed sixth out of 11 teams over the par 71, 6,593-yard course, carding a 55-over par team score of 623 (314-309) after two days of competition. Host CSU won the event with a 17-over par mark of 585.
The Patriots were tied for seventh (+30) after the first round, but improved on their scores on day two to move up in the standings. Junior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) led Mason in scoring, firing a 75-77=152 to finish tied for 15th overall. Senior Brian Marfori (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) tied for 18th with scores of 79-74=153. Sophomore Ryan Jeun (Laurel, MD/DeMatha) scored the lowest two-day total of his career and posted his best finish in five events after scoring 77-81=158 to place tied for 32.
Mason senior Ben Hogan (Centreville, VA/Centreville) (83-78=161) and junior Carl Jacobson (Moline, IL/Moline) (87-80=167) also competed.
Individually, freshmen Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing) and Mike Kirby (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) also competed along with senior Chris Barr (Springfield, VA/West Springfield). Cavanagh tied for 32nd with a 78-80=158 score, while Kirby shot 85-78=163. Barr tied for 21st after firing 154 (72-82).
George Mason returns to action March 23-25 at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate held at the Golden Horseshoe Club Green Course in Williamsburg, VA.
