CSU's Swindle Stifles George Mason In 5-2 Buccaneers Win

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston Southern sophomore left-hander R.J. Swindle scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings, striking out 12, as the Buccaneers defeated George Mason, 5-2, at Buccaneer Field on Friday afternoon.

Swindle (1-0) did not walk a batter and raised his season total in strikeouts to 27 in 21 innings of work. Swindle allowed two doubles and three singles, throwing 114 pitches. Centerfield Jordan Haar, shortstop Brad Woods and designated hitter Jeff Kolhagen led the offensive attack with two hits each. Right fielder Brandon Massey had two RBI, including a solo homerun.

George Mason got three hits each from shortstop Jeff Palumbo and second baseman Bruce Baldwin. Starting pitcher Chris Murray (0-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs over four innings.

Charleston Southern broke through with two runs in the bottom of the third, adding a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. George Mason scored single runs in the eighth and ninth, but had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth before Haar retired Baldwin on a fly ball to Woods.

The victory snaps CSU's four-game losing streak, improving the Buccaneers' record to 2-5 on the season. George Mason falls to 1-3 on the season.

George Mason will play at the College of Charleston on Saturday.
