RICHMOND, Va. - George Mason couldn't find an answer for either East Tennessee State or East Carolina as the Patriots lose by identical 5-0 scores in both contests on day two of the Virginia Commonwealth 4-1 Women's Tennis Invitational Saturday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on VCU's campus.
The Patriots, who also dropped matches to No. 25 VCU and Norfolk State Friday, lose their four straight contest and fall to 1-4 in dual matches this season.
In its first match of the day against East Tennessee State, Mason lost three of four singles matches in straight sets and fell in doubles in straight sets. Senior Dinali DeSilva (Negombo, Sri Lanka/Stafford International School), playing at No. 2 singles for the first time this season, was the only player to take her opponent to three sets. DeSilva won the first set 6-4, but lost the second 6-0 to force a super tie-break third set. DeSilva did manage to win a few points, but it was not enough as she fell 10-6 in the third.
Mason didn't fare much better against East Carolina in its second match of the day. Dropping straight set decisions at No. 2 through No. 4 singles as well in the doubles competition. Freshman Jenn Dektas (Maineville, OH/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) pushed her opponent at No. 1 singles to three sets after winning the first by a score of 6-3. Dektas dropped the second, 6-1, and lost 10-5 in the super tie-break.
George Mason is on the road Saturday at Georgetown in its next contest. The match will be played at 5:30 p.m. at the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA.
