FAIRFAX, VA--The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams both clinched the Patriot Invitational title at the Aquatic & Fitness Center on the campus of George Mason University Sunday with scores of 827 and 956, respectively. Host-school Mason finished second on the women's side with 728 points and third on the men's side (605).
For the women, Jackie Rodriguez of Duke set a new meet record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:17.74 to finish first, while Mason's Christy Anderson placed third with a time of 2:21.50. Lauren Hancock captured the 200-yard butterfly for the Blue Devils (2:01.18), while Duke's 400-yard freestyle 'A' team of Nora Stupp, Alison Sundberg, Amy Halligan and Julia Lewis placed first with a time of 3:30.86. UMBC's Astrid Sperling set a new meet record in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.47), while teammate Agnes Stanislawska also set a new meet record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.75. Mason's Jamie Downing owned the one-meter dive event as she set a new meet record with 527.20 points to finish first.
On the men's side, Duke's Billy Pearce claimed the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:50.62, while Mason's own Tim Norton finished third in 1:51.46. Kevin Arthofer added another first place finish for the Blue Devils in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.28), while Brad Green of UMBC won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.87. Geza Szabo was another strong finisher for UMBC as he claimed the 200-yard butterfly title in 1:51.35, just .08 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Joe Houchin was right behind at 1:52.34 to finish third for the Patriots.
Both Patriot swimming and diving teams will return to action when they compete at the U.S. Open in Seattle, Wash. on Dec. 4-6.
