Duke Men, Women Continue to Lead at Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, VA ... The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams each maintained its lead after Saturday's second day of competition in the Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic & Fitness Center. Host George Mason was second in the women's competition and third on the men's side.

The Duke women had a commanding 669 points, holding a 207-point advantage over second-place George Mason, which had 462 points. Maryland-Baltimore County was third with 449 points and was followed by UNC Wilmington (288), George Washington (257), Seton Hall (170), Shippensburg (132), Georgetown (114), American (80), St. Francis (8) and Howard (6).

The Blue Devil men also held a solid lead with 595 points for a 161-point lead over second-place UMBC at 434 points. George Mason was third with 400 points and was followed by Seton Hall (327), UNC Wilmington (268), American (267), George Washington (167), Shippensburg (108), Georgetown (42) and Howard (10).

Amy Halligan was among three Duke women to win individual events and two Blue Devil relays were also victorious. Halligan set a meet record with a time of four minutes, 24.46 seconds in the 400-yard individual medley, while Lauren Hancock won the 100 butterfly in 56.41 seconds and Jackie Rodriguez took the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.24. Duke's "A" team of Katie Fay, Rodriguez, Hancock and Nora Stupp captured the 200 medley relay in 1:46.85, and the "A" squad of Stupp, Alison Sundberg, Hancock and Rodriguez won the 800 freestyle relay in 7:38.02 to also set a meet record.

UMBC had two women win events. Agnes Stanislawska took the 200 freestyle in 1:53.22, while Astrid Sperling captured the 100 backstroke in 56.95 seconds.

On the men's side, Duke's John Humphrey won the 400 individual medley (4:00.07) and the 100 butterfly (51.25) to lead the Blue Devils and teammate Kevin Arthofer took the 100 breaststroke in 57.34. UMBC's Jakub Scoczynski won the 200 freestyle in a meet-record time of 1:40.17 and joined "A" teammates Carlos Canepa, Adam Blais and Josh Farley to capture the 800 freestyle relay in 6:49.57, setting another meet mark. Seton Hall's Jack Leavitt won the 100 backstroke in 51.47 and was the lead swimmer along with teammates Steve Falcone, Jason Kay and Mike Larosa as the Pirates' "A" team won the 200 medley relay with a meet-record time of 1:34.39.

Several George Mason swimmers had solid performances. Sophomore Tim Norton was second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:01.49 and joined teammates senior Matthew Boyle, junior Mike Peterson and senior Todd Long in placing third in the 800 freestyle relay in 6:56.83. Peterson was third in the 200 freestyle in 1:42.00, freshman Joe Houchin was third in the 100 butterfly in 51.44, and the 200 medley relay team of senior Nate Kellogg, junior David Cooper, sophomore Eric Wellington and Long was third in 1:35.28.

On the women's side, the 200 medley relay team of freshman Rebecca Jimenez, freshman Liz Ouzts, junior Emily Welty and senior Samantha Ladeveze finished third with a time of 1:48.80.

The Patriot Invitational concludes Sunday.
