FAIRFAX, VA--George Mason University's swimming and diving teams both dropped their first meet of the season to Texas Christian University at the Aquatic and Fitness Center Thursday evening. The Patriot women (2-1) registered 132 points to the Horned Frogs 156 (2-1), while Mason's men's team (1-1) collected 125 to TCU's 155 (2-0).
"We had some very good swims come up short against a very good TCU team," said head coach Peter Ward.
On the men's side freshman Tom Koucheravy (Fairfax, VA) was close to breaking Mason's 1000-yard freestyle school record with a first place finish in 9:43.99, while Jon Appleman (So.; Fairfax, VA) collected 228.07 points to place first in the one-meter diving event for the Patriots. Junior Christy Anderson (Caledon East, Ontario) finished strong for Mason in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.67 for a first place nod and Anderson garnered another first place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:11.70. Jamie Downing (Sr.; Midlothian, VA) placed first in the one-meter diving event and third in the three-meter dive with 249.90 points and 238.20 points, respectively.
"Tom (Koucheravy) just missed the school record in the 1000-yard freestyle, which was fun and exciting to watch," said Ward. "For the women, Christy (Anderson) is a very tough swimmer who continues to race very well every time she swims and that was evident in the 200-yard breaststroke tonight."
Both Patriot teams will return to action on Halloween when they travel to Williamsburg, VA to take on William & Mary at 4 p.m.
