Mason Swimming and Diving Teams Collect Wins

FAIRFAX, VA--George Mason University's swimming and diving teams defeated Old Dominion at the Aquatic and Fitness Center Saturday afternoon in their season home opener. The Patriot women (2-0) won with 175.50 points to the Lady Monarch's 122.5 (0-1), while Mason's men's team (1-0) registered 196 total points and ODU (0-1) earned 102 on the afternoon.

Freshman Rebecca Jimenez highlighted the women's side as she finished first in three events, including a 1:00.37 performance in the 100-yard backstroke and she swam the 200-yard backstroke in 2:23.92 to edge by ODU's Jessica Miller (2:23.95). Jimenez was the lead-off swimmer in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.95), for her third first place finish, which comprised of junior Christy Anderson, freshman Brooke Crowther and senior Samantha Ladeveze. Jamie Downing owned the diving events as she placed first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events with 222.53 points and 238.43, respectively. As a whole, the women garnered first place honors in nine of the 16 events.

On the men's side, the 200-yard medley relay team of senior Nathan Kellogg, junior David Cooper, freshman Joe Houchin and junior Eric Wellington opened up the meet with a first place performance in 1:36.73. Sophomore Tim Norton finished first in three events on the afternoon with his first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.98, followed by the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.77) and then he posted a time of 4:09.18 in the 400-yard IM, over five and a half seconds faster than teammate, Houchin. The men's team placed first in 13 of the 16 events in their first dual meet of the 2003-04 campaign.

Both Patriot teams will return to action on Oct. 30 when they host Texas Christian at 6 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center on the campus of George Mason.
