FAIRFAX, VAThe George Mason softball team held two fall tournaments this year, and posted an overall record of 4-2.
On Sept. 21, Mason hosted UMBC, Mt. St. Mary's (MD) and Morgan State in a four-team round-robin tournament. The Patriots went 3-0 on the day, defeating UMBC 5-2, Mt. St. Mary's 2-1 and Morgan State 9-3.
Mason defeated Morgan State in another tournament game on Oct. 5, but the Patriots were not as successful against Maryland, the other participant, losing a pair of games to the Terps.
The Patriots averaged just under four runs a game during the fall season, keeping the offense on par with the 2002 season, while freshman Missy Hartman hit .312 to lead all players on this year's squad.
Mason opens up its official season Feb. 14-16, 2003, at the Triangle Classic in Chapel Hill, NC. Its scheduled opponents for that tournament will be Elon, Long Island and Ohio.
