The women's team from Mt. St. Mary's College scored 54 points and the University of Delaware's men's team posted 34 points to take the team titles at the Mason Invitational cross country meet at Bull Run Regional Park on Saturday morning.
Delaware's Erin Gemmill placed first of 70 competitors in the women's 6,000-meter race in 23 minutes, 27.46 seconds (23:27.46). Radford's Emily Doland was the runner-up in 23:41.29, followed by George Mason senior Michelle DiPenti (Warren, PA/Warren Area), finishing third for the second straight week in 23:47.21. Mt. St. Mary's had five runners place in the top 20, led by Agnes Kipkuna in fourth place in 23:55.51.
Pius Stucki of Virginia Commonwealth led the men's 8,000-meter race, placing first of 63 runners in 26:06.50. Mt. St. Mary's Cleophus Koros was the runner-up in 26:19.81, followed by Radford's Tim Dutton in third with a time of 26:22.89. Delaware placed four runners in the top 10, led by Patrick Riley finishing fourth in 27:04.26.
George Mason's women's team placed three runners in the top 20, to finish fifth of eight teams with 111 points. Sophomore Sara Hines (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg) finished 12th in 24:35.85, while junior Dana Early (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) was 14th in 24:44.18.
The Patriot men's team finished sixth of eight teams with 145 points. Junior Ricardo Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica/SW Christian CC) led George Mason, placing 23rd in 28:38.91. Senior Kevin Nishiyama (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East) finished 27th in 29:11.51.
George Mason's cross country teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, SC.
