Blacksburg, VA ... The George Mason University men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Virginia Tech Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Rector Fieldhouse.
George Mason's men's team had several athletes turn in top-10 performances, including senior Serge Bengono (Yaounde, Cameroon/Younde) finishing fifth in the 60 meters in 6.87 seconds. Junior Ricardo Cunningham (Clarendon, Jamaica/Vere Tech/SW Christian CC) was sixth in the 800 meters in 1:53.69.
Sophomore Jonathan Martin (Fairfax, VA/Bishop O'Connell/Cal State Fullerton) tied for third in the high jump with a 6-foot, 8?-inch performance, while junior Wayne Wright (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was also successful in the field events, placing eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 7? inches.
Junior Ben Sommers (Nashua,NH/Nashua) was fourth in the 5,000 meters in 15:54.44. Sophomore transfer Richard Phillips (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Ardenne/Abilene Christian) and the men's 4x400-meter relay also picked up top-five finishes. Phillips placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.03 seconds, while the 4x4 placed fourth on the banked track in 3:17.23.
Junior Kim Morgan (Houston, TX/Alief Hastings) led the women's team with two top-10 finishes, placing third in the long jump with a 19 foot, 2? inch performance and ninth in the 60 meters in 7.69 seconds. Freshman Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, FL/Flagler Palm Coast) also picked up two top-10 finishes, tying for sixth in both the triple jump (39 feet, 10? inches) and high jump (5 feet, 3 inches).
Junior Corri Allen (Sacramento, CA/Laguna Creek) was the highest finisher for either team, placing second in the long jump with a season-best leap of 19 feet, 3? inches.
Other top-10 finishes were turned in by freshman Alycia Williams (Palm Coast, FL/Flagler Palm Coast), placing sixth in the 400 meters in 56.06 seconds; sophomore Sheena Davidson (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech), placing eighth in the 400 in 56.50 seconds; junior Sheena Goss (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek), placing ninth in the 800 meters in 2:15.91; and the distance medley relay in ninth place in 12:08.15.
Both teams return to action this week, with the men's team competing at Army's Amory Invitational in New York, NY, on Friday, Jan. 24, and the women's team heading to Landover, MD, for the Maryland Invitational at the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex on Saturday, Jan. 25.
