FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - George Mason's men's golf team earned its best finish of the fall season thus far, tying for sixth-place overall out of 18 teams at The McLaughlin golf tournament held Sept. 27-28, in Farmingdale, NY. The Patriots fired two-round scores of 292-291=583 to equal Rutgers (288-295), as the 54-hole event, which was scheduled for three rounds, was shortened due to expected heavy rains from Hurricane Isidore. Host St. John's (566) won the tournament, at the par-70, 6,555 yard Red Course at Bethpage, by two strokes over second place Princeton (568). Maryland finished third at 572.
The heavy rains contributed to higher scores on day two, but the Patriots, who were in ninth-place after day one, managed to post a lower total, allowing them to move up in the standings. Only two other teams - 14th-place Liberty (301-300) and 18th-place Hofstra (310-310) tied or lowered their scores on the second day.
Freshman Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing) led the charge for George Mason in only his second collegiate tournament, finishing seventh out of 93 competitors with a score of 141. He posted a career-low 69 on day two of the event to pace the Patriots. Junior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) continued his steady play, tying for 12th-place with a score of 143 (71-72). Seniors Brian Marfori (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) (72-76=148) and Chris Barr (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) (77-74=151) tied for 30th and 49th, respectively. Junior Carl Jacobson (Moline, IL/Moline) fired a 159 (81-78).
George Mason takes a week off before traveling to Wallace, NC to compete in the River Landing Intercollegiate, Oct. 13-15, at the River Landing Country Club. UNC Wilmington will host the event.
