HARRISONBURG, Va. - George Mason's men's golf team continued its fall season over the weekend, competing in the James Madison Invitational, Sept. 21-22, on the par-71, 6,496-yard Lakeview Golf Course in Harrisonburg, VA. The Patriots placed 10th overall (+17) in the 18-team tournament. Penn State, which finished second last year, won this year's team title, firing a new school record with a three-round total of 280-269-271=820 (-21). Host James Madison was second at seven-under par and a team score of 845. Maryland was third at two-under. Mason carded a team score of 286-289-294=869.
George Mason opened the two-day tournament tied for sixth overall after a two-over showing in the first round. The Nittany Lions, who led the event after the first round with a three-stroke team lead, broke away from the pack in round two, improving to 19-under and held a commanding 12-stroke advantage heading into Sunday's final round. The Patriots dipped to seven-over after the second round and carded 294 in round three.
Junior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) was the only Patriot who placed in the top 20, finishing in 12th place out of 90 individuals with a three-round total of 211 (70-72-69). Junior Ben Hogan (Centerville, VA/Centreville) fired a 220 to tie for 43rd, as did senior Brian Marfori (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell), who also carded a career-low 69 in round one. Entering his first tournament as a Patriot, freshman Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing) (220) also finished tied for 43rd. Senior Ben Adlard (Cape Town, South Africa/Pinelands) shot 227.
George Mason continues its season this weekend at The McLaughlin at Beth Page, Sept. 26-28, at the Beth Page Golf Course in Farmingdale, NY. St. John's University hosts this weekend's tournament.
