FAIRFAX, VA ... Eight athletes posted provisionally qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in nine events at the season-opening Father Diamond Open, hosted by the George Mason University men's and women's track & field teams at the George Mason Fieldhouse.
The women's team from South Carolina, the 2002 outdoor National Champions, won 11 women's events, and had two NCAA provisional qualifiers in three events. The Gamecock men won five events and produced two NCAA provisional qualifiers in one event.
Aleen Bailey paced South Carolina, winning the 60 meters in 7.43 seconds and the 200 meters in 24.06 seconds to qualify in both. USC's Nicole Kendrick provisionally qualified in the shot put with a 50-foot, 2?-inch winning throw.
South Carolina's Corey Taylor and Charles Ryan were the top collegiate finishers in the men's 60-meter hurdles, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with times of 7.87 seconds and 7.89 seconds, respectively. In the preliminary heat, Taylor clocked in even faster at 7.80 seconds. Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Champion Allen Johnson won the event in 7.48 seconds, followed by former George Mason All-American Maurice Wignall in second in 7.67 seconds.
Virginia Tech's Spyridon Jullien was the first NCAA provisional qualifier of the day, winning the men's weight throw with a 66-foot, 8?-inch mark. Other men to post qualifying performances were Georgetown's Davin Williams winning the triple jump with a leap of 51 feet, 3 inches, and David Stephens of South Carolina State winning the pole vault with a 17-foot, 5?-inch performance.
Treniere Clement of Georgetown was the top collegiate finisher in the women's mile in 4:47.30 to provisionally qualify. She finished behind former Georgetown standouts Katrina deBoer and Autumn Fogg. Georgetown's Erin Sicher was the second collegiate finisher in 4:49.29, just 0.29 seconds off the NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Competition included athletes from 22 schools, including George Mason, South Carolina, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Seton Hall.
The Patriots return to action next weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, VA, from Fri., Jan. 17 through Sat., Jan. 18.
