Redshirt freshman Evan Maag went into the MAC tournament seeded third. He had a bye in the opening round and in the quarterfinals, he pinned Buffalo’s Hunter Shaut. In the semifinals, Maag beat Tyler Swiderski of Central Michigan University, 5-3 and in the finals, he scored one of the biggest wins of the weekend nationally. Not only did Maag avenge a loss from earlier in the season, but he did so in grand fashion. He pinned the No. 12 ranked wrestler in the country in the first period, securing the fall at two minutes and 49 seconds over Ohio University‘s Garrett Thompson. Maag became only the second-ever Mid American Conference Champion for the Mason wrestling team. Later that evening, Malachi DuVall joined him as a conference champion after two nationally ranked wins and a 4-0 record at the championships.
