– George Mason University women's volleyball coach Aylene Ilkson
has announced the team's 2018 schedule, which includes four local non-conference tournaments and home contests against A-10 foes Dayton, George Washington and VCU.
"I'm very excited for this upcoming season and think this schedule reflects it," Ilkson said. "We are able to play in a lot of very competitive local tournaments in preseason at Georgetown, Virginia and also participate in the DC Challenge. Our schedule also allows us to play some reigning conference champions in American University and Radford, which is exciting and I know will prepare us for our conference play."
The Green & Gold will open the season at the DC Challenge on August 24, traveling to the 2017 Patriot League Champion American for a 7 p.m. contest. Mason will host Howard to finish the challenge on August 25 (5 p.m.).
The following weekend, the Patriots will travel to the nation's capital for the Georgetown Tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The tournament features a trio of contests, with Mason facing Penn on August 31 at 7 p.m. The Patriots will play Georgetown (12 p.m.) and Norfolk State (4 p.m.) on the final day of competition.
Mason will then take on Navy for a weeknight away game in Annapolis, Md. on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
Next up, the Green & Gold will head south to the University of Virginia for a weekend of matches. The Patriots will face UNC Wilmington on Sept. 7 (2:30 p.m.). On Sept. 8, Mason will play Youngstown State (11 a.m.) before battling with the host University of Virginia later that evening (7 p.m.).
The Patriots return home to host a two-day long tournament, which features matches against Northern Colorado (Sept. 14), Norfolk State (Sept. 15) and Radford (Sept. 15), who won the 2017 Big South Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The A-10 portion of the schedule begins with a two-week home stand, with contests against Dayton (Sept. 21), Saint Louis (Sept. 22), George Washington (Sept. 28), Fordham (Oct. 5), and Rhode Island (Oct. 6).
For the remainder of October, the Patriots are on the road with consecutive away contests at VCU (Oct. 12), Davidson (Oct. 14), Duquesne (Oct. 19), La Salle, (Oct. 21) and George Washington (Oct. 25).
The Green & Gold will return home for a duo of home matches against Davidson (Nov. 5) and VCU (Nov. 6).
The regular season will conclude with a set of weekend away contests at Rhode Island (Nov. 9) and Fordham (Nov. 10).
VCU will host the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship November 16-18.
