FAIRFAX, Va. –
After a scoreless first half, the George Mason women's soccer team fell to No. 14 Rutgers 2-0 on Friday night at George Mason Stadium.
Mason (0-6-0) played a solid defensive game in the first 45 minutes, limiting the Scarlet Knights to just one shot on goal. Rutgers entered the match ranked sixth in the nation in scoring with 18 goals through five games.
After the break, Rutgers (6-0-0) took the lead early in the second half when freshman Alexa Ferreira took a forward pass and scored from 15 yards out in the 48th minute to make it a 1-0 game. The Scarlet Knights added a goal in the 80th minute for the 2-0 final.
The Patriots finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, including 4-3 in shots on goal. Mason had five corner kicks while Rutgers had three. The Scarlet Knights have not allowed a goal this season, recording six straight shutouts.
Mason freshman forward Kayla Hamric
led all players with six shots and two shots on goal.
The Patriots are on the road with a trip to Towson on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex in Towson, Md.
