Patriot Women Finish First at Mason Spring Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's track and field teams took advantage of their opportunities at their lone home meet of the outdoor season.

Thirty-six schools and more than 1,200 student-athletes competed during the Mason Spring Invitational on Saturday at George Mason Stadium. Senior Michelle Wallerstedt (discus) and junior Sommer Sharpe (400-meter hurdles) collected first-place finishes to lead the way for the women, who placed first with 80.5 points. The men took third with 56 points.

Wallerstedt, who set the school record in the discus (53.55 meters) earlier this spring, stayed perfect this season with her fourth victory in the discus in as many meets. She won with a toss of 53.14 meters (174 feet, 4 inches). Sharpe took first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.34.

Junior Ashley Lucas finished second in the 200-meter dash (24.72) and fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.14). Junior Sharon Dorsey placed second in the 400-meter dash (56.28) and fifth in the 200 (personal-best 24.98).

The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished second in 46.38. Junior Shelby Garnand tied for third in the championship division of the pole vault with a leap of 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7 ¾ inches). Junior Deonna Diggs took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.56.

On the men's side, junior Raeshawn Bishop placed second – first among collegiate participants – in the long jump with a leap of 7.01 meters (23 feet). Freshman Tyler Benson posted a time of 48.53 in the 400-meter dash to place fourth (third among collegiate runners).

Senior Ryan Williams took third in the javelin with a toss of 58.38 meters (191 feet, 6 inches). Senior Logan Besougloff was fourth in the pole vault championship division with a mark of 4.70 meters (15 feet, 5 inches). Sophomore Rico Gomez placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.49.

Junior Nathan Schulte took fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.86. The men's 4x400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 3:18.78.
