DES MOINES, Iowa – Throwing close to home, George Mason senior Michelle Wallerstedt
finished in the top 10 at one of the toughest meets in the nation.
Wallerstedt placed 10th in the women's discus at the Drake Relays on Friday at Drake Stadium. She threw 42.46 meters (139 feet, 4 inches). She just missed the cut for the finals, which takes the top nine.
The fifth-year senior from Omaha, Neb., about two hours from Des Moines, had won all six of her previous discus competitions this season. She set the school record in the discus (53.55 meters) in the season-opening meet at the Hurricane Invitational and set meet and stadium records while winning at the Colonial Relays.
Wallerstedt and the Patriots are back in action for the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships next Saturday and Sunday at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass.
