FAIRFAX, Va. – After playing two straight games on the road, the George Mason men's soccer team is excited to be home.
The Patriots welcome Longwood for their home opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday at George Mason Stadium. Mason (0-2) is looking to bounce back after suffering road losses at American and East Tennessee State to start the season.
Under 12th year head coach Greg Andrulis, the Patriots are 9-1-1 in home openers. They've won their last seven home openers, dating back to 2009. In 2015, Mason went 4-4-2 at George Mason Stadium.
This will be Mason's sixth meeting against Longwood. The Patriots are a perfect 5-0 against the Lancers, including a 1-0 win in 2015 at Longwood in Farmville, Va.
The Lancers are off to a 1-0 start, picking up a 4-0 victory over the Virginia Military Institute on Aug. 26. Last year, Longwood posted a 9-9-1 record, with a 4-4-1 mark in Big South Conference play.
The Patriots last played on Wednesday, losing 4-2 to ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn. Freshman Tunde Akinlosotu scored his first career goal to put Mason on top early. But the Bucs scored twice before halftime to take the lead. Junior forward Henning Dirks, who led the team last year with seven goals, scored his first goal of the season to tie the game in the 70th minute. But ETSU answered with two goals in the final 13 minutes to secure the victory.
