Atlantic 10 Conference Releases Cross Country Preseason Polls

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The George Mason men's cross country team has been predicted to finish fifth in the conference, while the women were tabbed to finish seventh in the A-10 preseason polls.  The poll was determined by a vote of the league's head coaches.

The men's cross country team had a successful inaugural season in the A-10 after finishing third last season. “We are really excited to get the season started,” said head coach Andrew Gerard. “We had some holes to fill after losing some seniors, but we have some guys that are more than capable of filling them.”

For the fifth consecutive season, La Salle has been predicted to take home the A-10 title.  The Explorers have won two out of the last three A-10 titles, including last season.  After finishing second in the conference last season, Saint Joseph's was predicted to finish runner-up again.  Duquesne, Massachusetts, and Mason rounds out the top five, followed by Saint Louis, Fordham, Davidson, Dayton, Richmond, VCU, George Washington, Rhode Island, and St. Bonaventure.

The George Mason women's cross country team has been predicted to finish seventh in the A-10 this season after finishing eighth in the conference last year. "Our situation with the women is the reverse of the men - we return virtually our whole line up from last year's championships,” said Coach Gerard. “With that in mind, we're really excited to work towards moving up in the A-10 ranks.  Combined with our low stick up front, defending A-10 Cross Country Champion Bethany Sachtleben, I think we have the pieces to do that."

Duquesne was tabbed to defend its 2013 A-10 Championship, followed by Richmond, La Salle, Saint Louis, and Dayton in the top five.  Massachusetts was predicted to finish just ahead of Mason at sixth, with Saint Josephs behind the Patriots in eighth.  Rounding out the preseason poll are Davidson, Fordham, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, George Washington, and VCU.

The Patriots travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 30 for the Duquesne Duals to kick off the 2014 season.  The 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships will be hosted by Duquesne University at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pa. on November 1.
